house in a (green) house
place: Orange County, VT
program: a compact inner-house, with living, kitchen, dining, bedroom, bath, and workspace, all enclosed within a larger green-house envelope that supports gardening, wellness, and flexible gathering spaces. circulation weaves between inner-house and green-house zones, playing with light and a layering of shelters.
the House in a Greenhouse project, nestled within the Green Mountains of Vermont explores how a compact dwelling can coexist within a larger glazed envelope greenhouse to extend seasonal living. The inner house contains essential programs for living, cooking, sleeping, and bathing, while the surrounding greenhouse moderates climate, supports year-round gardening, and layers the boundary between “indoor” and “outdoor” space. Sited to capture southern light and nestle into the existing topography, the structure frames views of the surrounding meadow and forest while harnessing passive solar performance. Through thoughtful design restraint and site-responsiveness, the design seeks a quiet harmony between human comfort and environmental stewardship.
