quonset cabins
place: washington county, ME
program: four bed and breakfast cabins. one primary cabin with gathering spaces and three secondary private cabins.
Nestled within a serene rural landscape, the Quonset Cabins are located on a 350 acre heavily forested site within Washington County, Maine, overlooking Meddybemps Lake. The initial scope for the project was four cabins. The primary cabin houses the gathering spaces for visitors and includes the caretaker’s suite on the upper level. The three secondary cabins are the private guest houses, available for short-term rentals.
Interwoven with the project's vision is the concept of 'forest as sanctuary.' The cabins, enveloped in the embrace of towering trees, invite guests to partake in the symphony of rustling leaves and gentle whispers of the wind. Trails carved into the landscape link each of the private cabins to the primary cabin, creating an enchanting journey that emphasizes both convenience and a place-based connection with the land.
The client’s decision to utilize Quonset Huts as the building shell was rooted in a desire for quick assembly during a short construction season. These gently curved structures blend seamlessly with the natural forms of the forest.
